Roasted Bali Coffee Beans light and dark

what's up with Bali?

The Story of Bali / Kintamani Coffee

High in the volcanic uplands of northern Bali, between Mount Batur and Mount Abang, lies the Kintamani plateau. Coffee here is grown alongside citrus orchards in small family plots, where farming is guided by the Subak Abian system, a traditional Balinese cooperative rooted in Hindu philosophy. This approach blends agriculture with spirituality and community, making Bali’s coffee story as much about culture as it is about beans.

Flavor and Profile

Bali / Kintamani coffee is recognized for its clean cup, bright citrus notes, and soft sweetness. Expect a light to medium body, gentle acidity, and a lingering floral finish. Compared to the heavier profiles of Sumatra or Toraja, Bali offers a delicate balance that appeals to drinkers who want clarity and brightness in their brew.

The Origin

Kintamani sits at elevations of 1,200–1,600 meters, on the slopes of active volcanoes that enrich the soil with minerals. In 2008, “Kopi Arabika Kintamani Bali” became Indonesia’s first Geographical Indication (GI) certified coffee, officially tying quality and identity to its place of origin.

The Coffee

Farmers here produce almost exclusively Arabica, using wet processing methods to highlight clarity. Harvest season runs from July to September, with beans typically sun-dried in small village yards. Production remains limited compared to other islands, keeping Bali’s coffee both niche and distinctive.

Bali / Kintamani Coffee

Farm to Table

Plots are small, often less than a hectare, and organized within Subak Abian cooperatives that regulate water, land use, and spiritual offerings. This system promotes fairness and collective decision-making, and has supported certification programs such as Fair Trade and Organic. Buyers benefit from traceable lots with consistent quality, directly tied to farming groups.
